Old Time Blog Adventures
Hey, hey! Have I ever told you about that one time we tried to leave the island? No? Okay, well hold onto your bonnets, because this is going to knock your slippers off!!
It was a mild spring day in 2003. Father, BB, Trapezoid and I had driven about 400 km in the last five hours. We were on our way to the ferry to enjoy a visit to relatives on the other side of the water. This was an event we had been anticipating for several months, so the energy level was unusually high.
When things go this well, one learns to expect things to happen. This is where I learned that lesson. That is to say, I did not expect anything out of the ordinary on this lovely evening driving down the highway in a five year old Dodge Neon at sunset.
We were just climbing the last hill before our supper stop when it happened! It was a holiday-changing moment. The car started to slow. We urged it along with encouraging cheers, but to no avail. It would stop on the side of the road, half way up the hill, just in sight of the golden arches which proclaim greasy goodness.
Being the twelve year old child that I was, I still didn’t understand the calamity which had befallen our vacation. I soon found out, partially, how very serious this was. We had to stay in a hotel. It was pooless, but it was a hotel!
Over the next few days, having brought nothing to amuse ourselves with, we explored, and went to the little mall down the road (which was HUGE), and watched a splattering of hotel tv. Have you ever noticed that hotel tv is different from all other tv?
On one of these days, we even braved a treck across town to the Dodge dealership which was ‘dealing’(laugh, laugh, laugh!) with our car. This seemed to bring about some changes in our situation. No, we were not told to continue to the ferry, simply to plan on staying over the weekend.
Now, if the dealership had not given us a loaner car this would have been an even more adventurous trip. But they did, so no need to fear. We transferred hotels, for a reason unbeknownst to me at the time, but I’m thinking the old one was probably booked for the weekend. The new hotel had a POOL! It was magical! And the varnish on the cabinets was much shinier.
Now, it seemed as if we were in the city. In a tall hotel, on a busy street, with a POOL at our very own disposal. *sigh*
On Monday we found out that the car was not going to be fixed in any kind of reasonable time period, so we had to return home. No ferry this time. We still had a very memorable and fun(for me at least ^__^) holiday on the island! And learned a few lessons while we were at it! These being:
-When things are going according to plan, expect them to change.
-Jungle Jims is yummy
-Cars are not invincible
-Hotels with pools are optimal
-When plans change, it is not the end of the world.
